The Golden Pot: A Modern Fairytale is a novella written by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffman, German romantic author of fantasy and horror, first published in 1814. Hoffman regarded it as his best story and it’s widely known as a masterpiece of romantic literature. Hoffman labeled this story as fairytale. It is a transformation of fairytale genre, invented by romantic authors. The novella consists of twelve chapters. The story begins with clumsy student Anselmus running through the Black Gate in Dresden. The story shows us the German way of life of the times when the author lived and filled with characters’ typical features of social psychology. The novella is full of funny stuff and irony and is close to be satiric. It is for reader to decide whether the story is serious or not.
