My band of high school buddies all had a wanderlust, to search out the world, some of us went global, others headed off across the country. This story recounts the year of 1974 as The Great Australian Bite follows a life-changing journey of a young man in his early twenties from the East Coast, across the Nullarbor Plain to Western Australia and back. While I chose to go off around the world, Alan veered westward, lured by a road trip and surfing life to Western Australia he’d read about in Tracks magazine. My journey had its own unforeseen escapades, but Alan’s journey provides fodder for this tale of adventure and humor. He experienced a maturing into adulthood, building bonds of friendship, trust, enjoyed the surfing life and traveling through cultural differences, and indifferences, all in one grand journey.
It takes place across the breadth of Australia and it includes a little of everything. The only caveat is that names have been changed to protect the guilty and the innocent alike. One of the few details we wish we had on video is the expression on the face of that Australian police detective, when he realized exactly who, he had in his police lockup.
