One must not gimble in the gyre.

On a warm spring day in June, a much older and far more advanced alien race arrives in a massive ship in the sky over Manhattan. For the next thirty-eight minutes, as panic ensues on the ground below, the aliens release a payload of millions of slimy green objects over the city. But when they depart as suddenly as they appeared, speculation spreads like wildfire. Why have they come? What are the green objects they left behind? What do they plan next? The days and weeks pass without a clear answer.

Until the second ship arrives. Then a third.

The truth, when it is revealed, will be far more sinister than anyone might have guessed.

An alien invasion parable (~10,000 words). Appropriate for general audiences.

*The Green Gyre *is a set of nested stories: an accounting of a series of alien encounters and our responses, a reflection of human behavior, and a modern day parable with a timely message. In the tradition of the best horror science fiction, "The Green Gyre" informs us about ourselves as much as it does the alien monsters standing on our doorstep. The story casts a stark reflection of humanity. Darkly ironic, tragically satiric, eminently recognizable. The story’s final scene imparts a startling glimpse at what might be in store for our future if we don't learn from our past.
