The Bible is our spiritual food – daily bread that can help us live in relationship with Jesus and in accordance with God’s perfect plan. But for many of us the stories of scripture can be difficult to fully understand. They are translated from another language, another culture, another time. Peter Stevenson offers a new take on some well worn (and perhaps therefore overly familiar) healing stories from the gospels. At times quirky and idiosyncratic, often humorous, but always insightful, Stevenson manages to pull of the feat of offering fresh takes on the biblical narratives in question. He does this in a way that is thoroughly congruent for him, by drawing on recent approaches from reader response theory, combined with aspects drawn from his own rhetorical and preaching style to offer an access point to these passages that is startlingly fresh and original. You may not agree with everything that Peter Stevenson says here, but you will be moved to think again about the texts in question and that is surely helpful.
