The House of Mirth is a novel about New York socialite Lily Bart attempting to secure a husband and a place in rich society. It is one of the first novels about manners in American literature, and one of the first to openly explore how American Victorian society offered little social mobility for women.
It follows Lily’s slow two-year social descent from privilege to a tragically lonely existence on the margins of society. Wharton uses Lily as an attack on, “An irresponsible, grasping and morally corrupt upper-class.”
