Anthony Perseveres wasn’t supposed to get accepted to a top university and obtain a college degree. Most people didn’t even expect him to live to the age of twenty-four—let alone get married, father children, and play an essential role in their lives. But Perseveres, a black Latino who grew up in a rough Bronx projects, did all of these things and more, surprising even himself. He managed to do it even though he had an absentee father and a mother who abused substances during a crack epidemic that swirled all around him. With grace and grit, he navigated the harsh terrain and went on to earn three college degrees. In this memoir, he shares his inspiring journey about struggling to succeed despite overwhelming obstacles. While he can’t pinpoint one factor that led to his success, his story serves as a blueprint for those who want to escape poor neighborhoods, abusive households, and makeshift prisons to do The Incredibly Unexpected.
