The Laugh a Minute Clinic began as a collection of humorous anecdotes collected over nearly 30 years of veterinary practice in a suburban small animal practice. However, "I'm a vet, and this was funny.", didn't seem to be a very good way to start a book. Therefore, Dr. Greiner went back to the beginnings of his career.
The desire to become a vet was present from an early age. That desire was nurtured by a loving family and fueled by the love of his first dog, Mittens. Through her health problems, he met the veterinarian who would become his first mentor. Becoming strongly focused on long term goals, Dr. Greiner takes his readers off to school with him. He explains how to succeed academically without going into crushing debt. It is still possible to get a bachelor's degree in four years or less (and without writing a major paper!)
The process of getting into postgraduate studies is compared to what was happening 30 years ago. Surviving those studies is not only possible, it can be done while having fun. Practical advise on surviving graduate studies is invaluable to young and old students.
The second half of the book is focused on having a vocation rather than finding a job. Work should be fun, especially after obtaining an education. Becoming a lifelong learner and giving back to the community are underlying themes as Dr. Greiner shares some of the experiences he has encountered over many years of practice. Many of the anecdotes are humorous. Some are poignant. All are enlightening.
Some of the challenges facing the veterinary profession are included...life is not all roses.
The Laugh a Minute Clinic will appeal to a wide audience from young to old, but it is a must read for young students (pre-highschool and up) and their parents (lots of warnings on the distractions to be found on campus). Animal lovers will be particularly touched by the pets' stories and the bonds they form with their owners.
You will laugh. You will cry. You will think.
