Arnwin is the mythical Celtic otherworld. The portals to our own dimension are controlled by the Sidhe, the Fairies of legend, and they have seen enough to know that any contact between the world would proved disastrous to Arnwin. Beyond their borders, three nations compete for access to rare iron deposits. Within each nation there are conflicting forces: in Grunwalt the Chrysteon Church fights against the secular science-based policies of the rulers; in Morgenley the Earl of Astraigh seeks to gain the crown; while in the largest country, Albany, the old battles between north and south begin to take on a political dimension. The Church's influence is strong in Morgenley, but has been weakened when, as described in 'The Dragon's Tooth', Owain, brought up as a peasant, is installed as King by Druids and their Sidhe allies.
Owain's lover Mairi, gave birth to a son and she is allowed to live in the Royal Palace but ends their relationship when Owain is betrothed to the heir to the Morgenlean throne, a union that the Druids and Sidhe expect will nullify any threat from Grunwalt or the Church.
An alliance between the Earldom of Astraigh and the Church succeeds in forcing Owain into exile while Mairi tries to reach her home village. It soon becomes apparent that the changing alliances and plots of the main players are targeted on not only gaining power but also seeking the means to reach our world and gaining access to its technology. Separated from their son and believing each other to be dead, Owain and Mairi battle their way across the lands finding new and old allies on the way, until the final showdown when the Owain must confront overwhelming odds if he is to save his family... and his world.
