Their problems were supposed to have been solved when they gave Lord Marilisin the ability to create a defense for the city. However, unsure of who else might be controlling the Dogs besides Teranasin, Krysilla must help Zhiv build the magical defense as fast as their little group can. It doesn't help that Lejer, her former husband, is in the city and none of them have discovered a way to free her from the spell that will force her to go back to her former husband and away from what has become her new family.

With Dogs to dispose of inside the city, a lady intent on winning Zhiv's heart, and her own struggles with casting spells, Krysilla must learn to find her own way or admit what she's begun to fear: it would have been better if she'd never left Lejer in the first place.

Krysilla and Zhiv's story continues in The Lord's Tale, the second volume in the Trial of the Ornic series.
