After the launching of operation Barbarosa, Hitler's attack against the Soviet Union, expected by everyone except Stalin, young Valentin is mobilized as part of the Siberian troops of general Zhukov.

After the liberation of Moscow, he is sent to Leningrad, where a terrible atrocity changes his patriotism to unreasoning hate for the enemy.

He is unexpectedly sent to the city of Stalingrad, where he takes part in what has been described as the most desperate battle in the history of war.

After sustaining a severe injury, he refuses the offer of demobilization, and remains with Zhukov until the end.
He is ultimately reunited with a girl he has only met once, but whom he has loved all along. Her dancing figure becomes a representation in his mind of the statue of Mamyev Kurgan, although it had not yet been erected.

Commemorating the victory of the U.S.S.R., this is the tallest female statue in the world. Unveiled on 15 October 1967, she stands on what was known as Hill 102, a burial site of old. 200 steps leading up from the bottom of the hill to the monument represent the 200 days of the battle of Stalingrad. Her height, including the sword, is 91 m, and she is held upright by her weight only.
