The west coast left the United States. Nevada piggybacked along but then refused to join the new country of Pacifica. Instead, the rebels formed the independent nation-state of NEVADALAND. In Volume 1, THE PLAYERS, Diesel Duran graduates from her low status as a ward of the state and enters into adulthood. Except in NEVADALAND, that means she must battle to the death in The Zone for the entertainment of home viewers. Girls don’t fight in The Games, but the system refuses to acknowledge its mistake. During her training, she learns how to cheat from Cheng, to fight from Bull, and to hide from Walker. And while these new skills certainly help, she’s got unique talents of her own.
