In searching for his lost faith and perhaps a wife, Reverend Bobby meets and counsels Polly, a woman who turns the tables and counsels him. He believes in the teachings of Jesus and enjoys the work and lifestyle of a pastor, but he no longer believes there is a God. The cruelties that he's witnessed are incompatible with the existence of a merciful God. His bishop exhorts him to fake it until his faith returns, and Polly advises him to follow his heart. He has three choices: he can return to his parish and fake it, he can establish a lay church that follows the teachings of Jesus, or he can give up the religious life and join his family's business. The choice that he makes surprises him.
