For centuries many have come to know God through the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus often used parables to teach. Much like Aesop's Fables, the parables are short, allegorical stories designed to teach a moral principle. The world in which Jesus taught was not unlike our own in terms of being characterized by oppression. The parables, more often than not, spoke about oppression as an evil, challenging the oppressors to change their ways and the oppressed to speak out. More than twenty centuries and countless translations later, we read those parables in, but seldom about, an entirely different cultural, political, and social context. Accordingly, they have lost their sting. And so The Sagebrush Gospel is my attempt to take the parables and other Bible stories and adapt their messages to our times.
