The Sanghunters is the second book in the Kudzu Clan series. This book continues the story of the McKaine siblings as they live in hiding in their uncle’s secluded cabin in the mountains of North Carolina.
Their uncle’s property is being threatened by back taxes, which could result in the discovery of their hiding place. This prompts their grandfather to leave the mountain in a desperate attempt to find their missing uncle.
The job of holding the family together falls squarely on the shoulders of the oldest sibling, Jessie. She finds it increasingly difficult to provide food for her growing brothers and sisters. In addition, Grandpa does not return in the allotted time, and now she is faced with the additional responsibility of attempting to raise the money for the back taxes. Without Grandpa, Jessie is also forced to gather ginseng in the wilds of the mountain all alone.
To further complicate matters, on one of her shopping trips to the general store, she bumps into a handsome young man who she had seen some years back as a child. Would he recognize her in her boyish disguise? Her trips off the mountain have now become a greater risk as she tries to avoid any further encounters with this young man, Raine Roberts.
Meanwhile, Raine has just finished college and moved back home to his grandmother’s farm. He is a regular at the general store and also a sanghunter. The odds of Jessie crossing paths with him increase greatly.
Jessie is determined to walk by faith as she meets these seemingly insurmountable challenges. Her father, uncle, and now her grandfather are all missing. So it is solely up to her to keep the promise made to her dying mother to keep the children together. How will she ever be able to provide for her siblings and insure that they remain hidden from the authorities?
Then the unthinkable happens, and Jessie’s faith is shaken to its core!
