This is H. G. Wells' 1902 fantasy novel, “The Sea Lady”. The story concerns a mermaid who comes to shore, ostensibly with the intention of joining genteel society but who really desires to seduce Chatteris, a man she once encountered near Tonga. The inspiration for the story was a time when Wells caught a glimpse of one May Nisbet wearing a bathing suit during a visit at Sangate, shortly after Wells had agreed to pay for her schooling following her father's death. Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as “The Time Machine” (1895), “The Invisible Man” (1897), and “The War of the Worlds” (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.
