David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was the son of a coal-miner and a mother from a family with middle-class aspirations.

He was a novelist, poet, travel writer, short story writer, playwright, art critic as well as one of the most consummate letter writers of the twentieth century. We have some 5,500 letters and postcards by Lawrence and, no doubt many have not survived, were deliberately destroyed or remain to be discovered.

This selection contains just one hundred of his letters, chosen to be varied, spanning his whole life (so his first known letter and his last) and discarding those that are just business or practical, arranging meetings and so on. Those that have been chosen, give an insight into the life and works of this remarkable man.
