Thomas Keightley (1789–1872) was an Irish writer best known for his works on mythology and folklore. Fairy Mythology published in 1928 gained the world popularity and was reprinted as The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves, and Other Little People. Regarded as a pioneer in the study of Folklore by modern scholars in the field, he was one of the early collectors of folklore.
“The Spirit of the Van” is a legend that was collected in the latter half of the eighteenth century and the collector seems to have entertained no doubt whatever of the truth of the adventures contained in them. The legend represents events that took place among the mountains of Carmarthen. There the tradition relates appears a being on the lake named New Year's Eve. It is called “The Spirit of the Van”. Someone says  it is a woman with long golden hair and pale face. But who is she and her origin?
