Rex Beach (1877-1949) was an American author, playwright, and Olympic water polo player.  After growing in Florida and attending law school, Beach joined the Klondike gold rush in 1900.  After spending several fruitless years prospecting in the Yukon and Alaska, he turned to writing.  His 1906 novel THE SPOILERS was one the bestselling works of the year.  In addition to a fairly successful literary career, Beach was a member of the 1904 U.S. Olympic water polo team, which won the silver medal.
