Caroline Thomas is not a nice person. She gets a kick out of hurting people with her catty and often cruel behavior. It’s a lark, a thrilling obsession, especially when she can lay the blame on someone else. The problem is that she feels bad after, guilty-ridden and depressed. This peaks after she dumps her boyfriend, David, for no good reason. Whit Whitman, a college professor interested in finding a cure for depression-from-guilt, offers her a way out: punishment. He claims punishment will purge guilt, that it is the only way. She agrees to try, not fully understanding that the cure might be worse than the disease.
