The Story of the Stars was written be George Frederick Chambers (1841-1915) in 1895. Chambers was introduced to astronomy at an early age by his mother's brother, Frederick Brodie (1823-1896), although an engineer by profession, was an enthusiastic amateur astronomer and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Chambers was himself elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1864 and served on the council 1886-87. He was a barrister by profession. For the best part of half a century he was one of Britain's most influential amateur astronomers, as author and administrator, and was a man of wide interest and achievements.
