Leaving Prince Hendry for dead beside the rising waters of a plunge pool, Toby Hollins heads toward the farmhouse near The Bay of Peaks and the comatose Celendra thinking of the reward MeGath with give him when he returns with the girl's errant soul. Luckily, Hendry is found and saved just in time by Thaddrick and Themos, twins and mages of old; as he recovers, he wonders about what he saw and if he will ever find his 'Selen' again.
Gideon and his friends continue to follow Thaddrick’s directions across Middique in a Seascope, a magical barge captained by Mannon, a Gojon and his Albastian wife Teray. As the barge docks in Ergan, on the Bay of Peaks, Teray goes to visit an old friend and sees Tisri, the missing Albastian Princess in the company of King MeGath and rushes off to inform her husband. Mannon has realised the travellers are not whom they appear to be and starts to ask questions. Then finally, as the whole company converge on the bulging Seascope, Themos produces a memory orb and proceeds to build a picture of events as the local magsmen become suspicious.
Sethron magically locks Toby into his room as the Princess wakes up from her sixteen-year coma. With her soul restored, she must now escape before once again her brother or MeGath try to take her. Sethron takes her to the Seascope where Hendry fails to recognise her as his love but offers the party refuge at Thurlstone Castle, in Lyresh, Hendry’s family seat.
As the company arrive at Thurlstone Castle Mayan’s waters break early and she is forced into labor. She and her unborn babies battle for their lives as MeGath fights through the ether to gain control of their power, whilst Gideon and the mages look on helplessly.
With magic, mystery upon mystery, truth, loyalty, betrayal and reunion all playing a part, Gideon is still no nearer finding an answer to his own problem, although he now knows what he has to do, but can’t help wondering if he has the courage to play his role through to the end.
