Yosef can only remember two things besides his name. The first is a pair of creepy, yellow eyes amidst black wisps of darkness. The second is a voice telling him to follow a road. When the road brings him to a city, he soon discovers he has a special sense, one that can hear the voice of silence and feel the presence of entities through soil and rock. But why does he have this sense which no one else seems to have?

Ninthalas, a True Faithen from the north, discovers Yosef at an inn while en route to the southern nations. According to refugees from Yosef's hometown, the boy is the only child to escape the clutches of a mysterious enemy known as the Black Assailant who led an attack on their village. Ninthalas is plagued by questions over Yosef’s mixed roots and peculiar circumstances. He vows to bring Yosef north with the hope of providing him a safe place should the boy’s memories resurface.

But the Black Assailant has plans to intercept them, take Yosef back and kill Ninthalas
