The Underground Railroad is the latest novel by author Colson Whitehead. The novel takes place during the time of slavery in the United States. Cora is a born a slave on a plantation in Georgia. She is considered to be an outcast by the other African-Americans enslaved on the plantation. When an opportunity comes to escape slavery, Cora is at first hesitant, but later accepts the invitation. Cora and her new travel companion, Caesar, take the risky journey through the Deep South on the Underground Railroad.
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead was awarded the Goodreads Choice Award and the National Book Award in 2016. That same year, it was nominated for the Kirkus Prize. It is considered an essential read and a brave book by The New York Times. According to the LA Times, the novel is a “beautifully” written tale. It is a “wildly inventive” story, according to The Guardian. Whitehead is considered to be one of the greatest American authors, in the opinion of NPR, after the release of The Underground Railroad.
