The US Open is the second oldest major championship in golf. Depending upon one's point of view, it started humbly in either 1894 or 1895. It has been sought after by the best professionals and amateurs in the world since its beginning. Professionals and amateurs from all walks of life and from all social and economic backgrounds have won the US Open championship. Many champions were in a group of competitors expected to win: men like Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and many others were in that group. Professionals like Cyril Walker, Olin Dutra, Sam Parks, Tony Manero, Orville Moody and amateur Johnny Goodman were considered long shots at best, but won the championship nevertheless. Sam Snead, considered one of the best to play the game, was expected to win. He had many chances but for some reason could never win the US Open. Competitors from all over the world try to qualify for a spot in championship and win a chance to be a US Open champion. The great thing about the US Open is anyone who qualifies has a chance to win the US Open. Those expected to win and those not expected to win...both kinds of competitors have won and lifted the US Open trophy.
