In 1520 thirteen-year-old Micas Anjos gains a coveted place on an expedition to the East Indies.  Leaving his native Portugal under the command of the charismatic Cristovoaõ Mendoça, the young apprentice map-maker is plagued with nightmares all through the voyage.  Little does he know that the dreams herald the beginning of a fantastical adventure which will begin on an island in a part of the world no explorer has ever before ventured to.

On reaching the East Indies, Micas’ ship becomes flag-bearer in a secret mission to find Marco Polo’s famed ‘Island of Gold’ and to claim it for King Manuel of Portugal.  A storm carries the expedition further south than any vessel has ever been.  On the way Micas and his best friend Carlo encounter friends and enemies; thieves and priests; slaves and soldiers; and a mysterious people called the Ngati Turehu who are unlike any race Micas has ever encountered.  When fate decrees that Micas becomes bound to the Turehu he is brought into conflict with his own shipmates; and his own beliefs and values are severely tested.  At the end of the adventure Micas’ entire life will have changed.

Set against the background of the Iberian Inquisitions and the race to claim New World territories, “The Witch of the Pacific” is a coming-of-age adventure story  played out on a set which spans from Europe to Africa, and from India to  the South Pacific.  Through its diverse characters the story examines universal questions on love, loyalty, trust, conformism, and integrity. It is aimed at readers thirteen years and above.
