The adult contemporary novel The Writing Box focuses on two
themes: one is the oddity of parallel lives, the coincidences and curious happenstances of time and place and events which sometime occur to people even though they do not know each other; and, the other is the gradual personal and emotional growth and development of the two main characters, Vanessa Fernandez and Ursula Ransom. The stories of the two women are told in alternating chapters. Vanessa’s third-person story spans eighteen consecutive days from December 24, 2000 to January 10, 2001, while Ursula’s first-person story is told in three-year intervals over fifty-one years, from 1949 to December 24, 2000.
Vanessa’s and Ursula’s paths cross on Christmas Eve, December
24, 2000, at the steel design of crossroad destiny.
