Wild Bill Hickok comes to life in the first installment of the Thunderhead trilogy. The very essence of the man is attempted to be captured here as he befriends and then becomes a business associate of a young photograph artist named Al Franklin.

Newlywed Hickok traveled to Deadwood in the summer of 1876 in the hopes of striking it rich either by panning for gold or by ridding the miners of theirs at the gaming tables. It was his wish to provide for his new bride—Agnes Lake Thatcher, a successful circus businesswoman in her own right—who was waiting for him back in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. But Hickok had a bad feeling about Deadwood, and on more than one occasion, he predicted that he would never leave the city alive. And he never did.
