Jesus Christ was raised as a Jew. He was born of Miriam, a Jewish woman, and could trace his Jewish lineage back hundreds of years. He lived most of his life in Israel. Isn't it logical that we need to study the Jewish marriage traditions - not only to understand his teachings, but also in order to understand the times we live in?
Expressions like “I have betrothed you with Christ”, “I will go and prepare a place for you, and return to bring you to me”, the tradition of blowing of the shofar, the talk about ten wise and ten unwise virgins are all a part of the Jewish marriage tradition
We also read about marriage set in heaven, the double value of a virgin compared to a widow, the New Jerusalem adorned like a bride and many other Jewish references. All this tells us that a basic knowledge about Jewish wedding traditions is necessary to fully understand the teachings of the Bible.
Even for our own salvation! If we miss these references, chances are that we miss the whole picture. Why would Joseph need to DIVORCE his betrothed wife-to-be before the wedding, for being pregnant?
The Western churches have tried to separate Christianity from its Jewish roots for centuries, but we need this knowledge to not go astray. The church in the West are almost obsolete and out of touch with society. Many Christians live in cohabitation, remarried and in same-sex marriages because the Church has deliberately forgotten its tie to Jewish marriage traditions.
Prepare to be astonished, admonished and corrected!
