Ann West Quarll was as brave and as strong as any woman in the Old West but she felt the world was falling in on her. There was trouble brewing between the whites and the Navajo and she had friends on both sides. A hard winter and a late spring had left her family's cattle herd in danger of starving. Then lightning struck a wire fence while her father and her brother were working it. It left them sound in body but confused in mind and given to senseless rages. In one of these rages, her father hired killers for a range war with Snakeskin McMurtry, the man she loved. Just when she was sure that things could not get worse, some outlaws with an old grudge against Snakeskin showed up. It was up to Ann to save their cattle, stop the wars, protect her family and her lover and do it without betraying anyone...including herself. This would take all her courage and brainpower and she would pay a terrible price.
