Dr. Bertuna asserts that there is a gap in conflict resolution research concerning successful gang member rehabilitation. This book looks to fill that void by evaluating the social transformation and rehabilitation of former gang members via the use of faith-based approaches. By focusing on research concerning a faith-based approach to gang removal, the outcome allowed Dr. Bertuna to create the theory HOPE (Holistic Outreach Program for Exit). The culmination of the design of this theory was based on the application of a faith-based approach to rehabilitation of gang members.
Furthermore, Dr. Bertuna is co-author of MAPCID (Model for the Analysis of Potential Conflict in Development), which allowed her to analyze conflict as an intrinsic part of development. It transcends a static view of conflict by capturing the dynamics between all parties involved during a development project. By following the model, one analyzes seven levels of conflict drivers and stimulates the continuous alignment of power, culture, and goals, enabling timely participation of all parties in the development process.
