The Star Guard was created to fill the vacuum in the galaxy's civilian sector created by the old Union Navy, which was not designed to deal with crime. The Star Guard’s mandate is to protect the civilians of the new Union from crime and criminals. The new Union Navy enforces galactic law and protects the galaxy from all external threats.
The new Union General Assembly passes laws to govern the civilian sector of the galaxy or planetary law. These are the day to day matters of the new Union not covered by Galactic Law.
The Star Guard has two primary functional groups – a ground force and a space force.
The space force or “Patrol” protects the many planets in the new Union from criminal activities by keeping the criminals away from the planets and out of the space lanes in and between the star systems. The airmen of the Patrol are human form synthetics with artificial brains that pilot, navigate, protect and support the Star Guard star ships of the patrol and the Star Guard support ships of the ground force. The male and female artificial life forms are trained in the same schools as the artificial life form sailors of the new Union Navy. And all of the Star Guard Officers attend the new Union Naval Academy.
The ground force or “Legions” are divided into two groups – Dominators and Rangers. The Rangers are human form synthetic soilders with artificial brains for civilian population interaction and observation. Rangers are divided into: infantry, artillery, armor, aviation, anti-aircraft, and logistics divisions.
The Dominators are land battleships with artifical brains with vast offensive and defensive weapons that can destroy any enemy or hostile force. The Dominators were originally part of the Union Planetary Army. It was decided the UPA should not operate independently of the Union Navy and the Dominators of the UPA should protect the civilian members of the new Union. Thus the Star Guard was born.
One Star Guard Ranger – Sergent Anzor had been a Union Navy Star Marine. He had been created by the Sixth Race with living Sixth Race brain and cardiac tissue. He had been raised and trained to be a Union Navy Admiral. After graduating from the Union Navy Academy with honors he volunteered for the Star Marines. He became a legend in the old Union Navy Star Marines. His friends were astonished when he volunteered for the Star Guard Legion. It was his friends in the Star Marines who would help him save the members of his Ranger Long Range Patrol platoon on several occasions.
In the beginning the Star Guard proved itself capable of dealing with the many warlords and criminal elements in the galaxy. Criminals – who had been invisible to the old Union Navy - were now finding it impossible to earn a living. The Patrol and the Legions kept them at bay and under control. The systems and planets the criminals had preyed upon were now crime free zones. The Star Guard made certain of it.
The days of the crime families and war lords appeared to be numbered. Then inexplicably the Star Guard suffered one defeat after another. Entire Legion divisions were wiped out...
