In 2015, Ian Thuillier spent three months travelling from Ho Chi Minh city to Hanoi, through many cities and villages to capture the life and landscapes of the Vietnamese people. The photos he took on his trip are compiled in his new book, 'Vietnam 40'. 'Vietnam 40' was first exhibited in Dublin on 10 December 2015 and also throughout multiple venues in Vietnam during 2016.

"Vietnam 40 is a focused series of photographs taken during my time in Vietnam where I spent three months travelling extensively from Saigon in the south to the far North and back down again."

"It was March when I started out and Vietnam was preparing for its 40 year anniversary celebrations.  As I travelled through the country, I became fascinated by the landscape and the people I met and I wondered what stories they had to tell. There were so many, both young and old who were visibly affected by the war.  Yet despite Vietnams blood stained history, I found a people who were both beautifully forgiving of their past and oppression, and a people who fought tirelessly for their independence and won."

The aim of Vietnam 40, is to pay tribute to this extraordinary country-both  landscape and people- forty years on from gaining Independence in 1975.

"These images include photos of survivors of the war, whose stories I needed to tell. Some were elderly and had lived through the horror of it, while some were young but were living with the legacy."
