Q&A WITH THE AUTHOR

Q: Your Witches of Etlantium series is unique in that it presumes a world that seems Earthlike but doesn't have any sense of the geography. It also gives your witches powers that, while they aren't unique in terms of concept, are different in terms of how they wield their powers.

If you had to describe the series to a reader who loves sword and sorcery series with elemental magic, how would you explain the type of magic the witches wield?

A: First of all, since I never seem to be able to write to typical tropes, I'd have to warn readers that my witches don't cast spells. They have an innate kinship with the element they are named for. My elemental magic series explores what might happen if a witch could control the very elements of earth in ways that terrified them and others. I wanted to know how they would manage their lives if they couldn't control the power or if the granting of them was actually part of a lost culture.

I base the water witch story on a vulnerable young witch being manipulated by her father in a world that is earthlike but ancient, formed from the war between twin gods. It's a sort of new adult fiction with witches except based in an ancient world.

Long story, long, my witches are part of a mythological world of Etlantium, and are the personification of four parts of a goddess's makeup: water, air, spark, and dust.
