This is the story of Marcellus a poor Plebe who lives in the Lower Subura of Rome. To survive he must theive and one morning Fortuna deserted him and he is caught stealing a round of bread.He knows that his lif is over as the Games are due to strt in Rome within the next few days and they Vigiles are combing the streets for criminals to provided the interval entertainment in th egreat circus.
Fortuna had not entirly deserted him and a Legion recruiting party passes when he is on his knees and he is taken by them and given an option that he cannot refuse and so he becomes a Tirone in the Fourteenth Legion which is in a permanant garrison camp on the banks of the great river Rhenus on th every edge of empire.
Little does marcellus know that as he travels north to begin his training th eLegion will soon be taking part in the invasion of Britannia which means that soon he will soon be going to war
