Brock Barnes loved the cowboy life. He had come west to California during the gold rush in 1850. That was ten years ago and when his dream proved to be more fantasy than reality he took a job driving cattle from San Francisco to Abilene. He not be making his fortune but he enjoys the freedom and excitement of rising the range. His boss, Clayton Wiley, pays more than enough to keep the whiskey and women flowing, so Barnes figures he has it pretty good.
Strong and handsome, His life is a never-ending stream of cow towns between California and Kansas and Brock has a girl in every town. Sometimes he can remember their names, sometimes he can’t, but what’s the difference? He’s never in any of them long enough to grow roots, and that’s just the way he likes it.
Things start to change for Brock on his latest trip to Abilene when he meets Carly Jessup. Carly has just come east from South Carolina to escape the ravages of the Civil war. She accepts the only job she can find, serving drinks in a local saloon, but it becomes clear this line of work isn’t for her. On her first night when another cowboy makes unwanted advances, Brock comes to her rescue. During the ensuing fight he shoots the man in self defense, but the local sheriff doesn’t see it that way.
When Brock escapes and runs to avoid the hangman’s noose, Carly insists on coming with him. On their journey they each learn something about themselves, each other, and what love really means.
