WELL, WHY THE PEACE CORPS?
Why are we doing whatever it is we're doing?
Since applying one’s experience, is the best and most useful tool to navigate through the labyrinth of life in general and Peace Corps service in particular; more and diversified is better.
Experience with success as well as experience with failure is most important to promoting the courage to keep right on to the end of the road in the face of disappointment with eyes open to new opportunities.
Of course good moral character is the underlying essential strength. Poor or immoral character is very important to understand and recognize. Immoral character is sometimes, most often, slyly hidden in otherwise shiny and attractive disguises.
A Peace Corps volunteer must continually monitor, reflect and maintain their own goodness, that is their own good moral character.
Nothing gets you through changing times and situations quite like being healthy, thinking clearly, with patience and a sense of humor. Oh yeah, a bottle of good water, a snack or two in your pocket and some toilet paper are pretty useful too.
Experience is just another way of saying “why” and “why not”, "how" and "how not to". It teaches us how to handle and proceed with a whole spectrum of strange surprises.
Some of the happenings so briefly written about in this rendering tell about flashy and remarkable successes, but also some incredulous and unwelcome failures.
One may ask; “How is that possible?” or “Then what happened?” It seems un-real; but, those are the things that happen to real people; they really do. They happened to me.
The lofty goals and illustrious history of the Peace Corps, and an understanding and having the requirements and experience, recognizing the changes, the good times to be had, and the prospects, caused me to sign up.
