A child is born and "with his first breath" death ends for all warm blooded being on earth. But with no death also comes the heartbreaking opposite . . . no more birth.
Douglas (Dougie) Azrael Moore grows up as any other child in the new world, he makes friends, goes to school, tries to figure out how people could ever have eaten the flesh of animals, and tries to find out about the mysterious legends of birth and death. He laughs at the silly antics of old man Wilkens as the old fool swears up a storm as he swings by his neck from a rope in the forest. He puzzles why his dad could possibly have really enjoyed the taste of bloody animal flesh after he bites a chicken on the leg and figures the pain from the chicken pecking him wasn't worth further experimenting. Life for young Dougie is a learning adventure and his two friends are closer to him than anyone realizes until Dougie's older brother Tim comes home for a rare vacation after spending the past 17 years searching the world looking for the Ancient One, the child that was born so that death would end. But the Protector, Tim, isn't the only person searching for the Ancient One, Reverend Mosea has his followers searching for the child also, his reason isn't as honorable as Tim's though because Mosea knows that whoever controls the child controls death and there's a lot of power and money if you're the only person able to kill. Tim must protect his brother but now more people are involved and the small band of family and friends travel across the United States to save two of their own only to end up prisoners of the power hungry reverend themselves.
Doug alone has the power to let mankind remain immortal or return them to the fragile mortals they were before his birth. It's a decision that will torment the boy as he watches his mother suffer with an incurable brain cancer knowing that as long as she lives the pain will remain, and as he watches his neighbor Mr. Wilkens suffer tremendous agony with each failed attempt to kill himself so he can join his beloved wife in death. To see the weariness in his father's eyes as he realized he'll have to spend an eternity working to support his family. But the boy also see the happiness in his sister's eyes when she becomes pregnant in a world without birth, when he sees the hope shining in his mother's eyes as she waits to hold her grandchild in her arms. It's a hard decision but one he will make with his brother the Protector's help.
