Ginika the main protagonist is from a small farming community called Iseleku which is a small settlement in the eastern part of Nigeria. Her parents decide to send her to work as a maid in a town many miles away from home in order to augment the family's meager income. The rains have been very bad and as a result, the crops on the family’s farm have been almost totally destroyed.
Pickings are slim and she is made to understand that her family is on the verge of starvation. So she is forced to leave her home and travel down to the western part of the country to work as a maid in one of the more affluent homes.
Her friend Ifeanyi is not asked to serve but decides to go with her because of the bond between them. Their service contract is on a yearly basis. Things go alright the first year as they find themselves with good families. It is the second year that things start to go horribly wrong. Through a queer quirk of fate they find themselves in the hands of a group of very dangerous and unscrupulous men who force them to sell their bodies for money for many months.
One of the many girls under the supervision of these diabolical individuals unwittingly kills their leader when the others are not around. In fear all the girls decide to flee. They now find themselves on the run from these dangerous men trying to cross a land they do not know and possibly get back to their homes. The second in command upon discovering the body of his boss decides then and there to chase the girls and execute them before they reach help or the police.
Therein begins a race across a somewhat unsettled land. One group determined to kill and the second determined to survive.
