Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet. Scott was the first modern English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and Scottish literature.

Woodstock or The Cavalier is a historical novel by Walter Scott written just after the English Civil War. Walter was influenced by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock, which in 1649 supposedly killed painfully tormenting parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock. The main plot deals with the escape of Charles the Second in 1652, during the Commonwealth, and his final triumphant return to London.
