Young Archie Martin and the railway robbers

The book is set in the 1950s, and based in a Staffordshire town. Young Archie Martin is a ten year old boy and an only child.

With his parents and their pet Welsh collie dog, Tam, they go on a visit to his Fathers friend’s house to help cut up a fallen tree. After a while he gets bored and pesters his Father for some money and goes off in search of a sweet shop.

On his way, a gang of boys approach him and he gets in a scuffle with the leader.

Out running the gang Archie finds the sweet shop and buys himself some. Attracted by the noise of a railway steam engine whistle he follows the sounds and looks over the fence to view the railway goods yard.

Archie makes his way back to his Father’s friend’s house. When passing the sweet shop where brought the sweets, he runs into the gang of boys again.

This leads Archie into an unexpected adventure thats takes him Liverpool docks and taken hostage.

The robbers get caught and Archie is freed. Further investigations reveal thefts have been taking place to at the other goods yard and a second gang is caught and Archie becomes the hero of the day.
