In this the thirteenth in the series of stories covering the activities of DCI Victor Moyes, we see him with the help of his second in command DS Victoria Morgan trying to solve a particularly gruesome murder. The victim is found on the eighteenth floor of a tower block but no one appears to have seen or heard anything out of the ordinary, and with no motive they have their work cut out to solve the crime.

We also follow the uncomfortable relationship that Victoria Morgan was hoping had come to an end with Charlie Osborne but his transfer is delayed, which leaves her in a dilemma. She goes completely off the rails, putting at risk not only her job but her relationship with Victor in her quest to feel wanted. Doing things completely out of character she almost loses it completely before fate steps in and saves her.
