Margaret Bourke-White was the ACE photographer for both FORTUNE and LIFE MAGAZINES between 1929 and 1957. Before she reached 3o years of age, she was rich and famous. She rose to the top of her almost-all male profession: beautiful, focused, and determined. She always got the shot she was after. She was a non-conformist all of her life, with a string of lovers and a string of photographic firsts that included shooting the Russian Five Year Plan in the early 1930s. She became a war photojournalist, shooting the skies as Nazi planes bombed Moscow, and working on front line trenches in four continents during World War II. She was allowed on a live bombing run, she was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, and she spent four years as the wife of author Erskine Caldwell. She also wrote a half-dozen books plus an autobiography.
