It is 1972 and the Vietnam War has taken its toll on Australia however twelve year old, ANDY DEAGON has bigger problems, she just wants stop feeling like a freak. Her younger sister EMMA seems to be going out of her way to ruin her life and her twin brothers JAMIE and MICHAEL are just an annoyance. Andy is looking forward to the summer holidays so that she can forget about her fear of high school and thinks that spending time with her friend LAURA, who she has known for the past three summers will make all her problems go away. Andy idolises Laura and somehow feels that spending the summer with her will give her the coolness she craves and needs to have when she starts High School in the new year. However, when Andy finally sees Laura again she is with friends from high school and things go horribly wrong. Laura even makes fun of Andy and Emma is incensed. She throws a ball covered in dog slobber at Laura, hitting her in the face. Laura takes it out on Andy and leaves in an angry state but Andy is so blinded by Laura that she only sees what her sister has done.
To Andy the situation feels like the end of the world and she blames Emma for ruining her friendship with Laura. A huge fight between the two sisters results, leaving Mum no choice but to ground them. A day at the beach is nearly the last for the family, when Andy, Emma, their dad and twin brothers are swept out to sea. Andy is forced to keep Emma calm during the ordeal. The life and death situation helps instigate a thaw in the cold war between the two girls. When their parents and Jamie leave for a shopping trip to the nearest town, Andy, Emma and Michael take the opportunity to explore the town. At the local fisherman's wharf they meet a local boy called PAT, the same age as Andy. At first Andy mistakes his quiet manner and she thinks he doesn't want to be friends, but Pat has a secret that has devastated his family.
Thanks to Pat, Andy learns to surf and her joy helps her forget all about her worries. Much to Andy's surprise, Emma feels the same way and the girls bond over their shared love of surfing. But will this new found peace last? Not if Laura can help it!
Andy Deagon Blah Blah Blah is a story of summer, surfing and freedom. It will draw you in, make you laugh and sometimes make you cringe with embarrassment, but most of all it will simply make you happy
