Juss.) contains a various number of biologically active ingredients. In plant protection mostly the insecticidal activity of neem products is important. Among these insecticidal active ingredients azadirachtin is the most important in biological pest management. Neem derivates influence insects in various ways. First they have an repellent effect, the insects avoid plants after neem application. Females of some lepidopterous insects also seem to avoid these plants and will not lay there eggs under them. Also there are antifeedant effects of neem, so that insects will not feed from neem-treatened plants or, when they feed, the food intake is significantly reduced. Neem ingredients also have an effekt on the methamorphosis of insects. So treatment with azadirachtin delayed moulting of Periplaneta americana for several days. Moulting, if it occurred was incomplete an resulted in the death of the insects subjected to the test. Some insect species will not moult into the imagine after neem treatment.
