“Joseph Andrews” by Henry Fielding was first published in 1742. The novel is also titled “The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his Friend Mr. Abraham Adams.”

It is considered to be one of the first novels in the English language. The author defined the novel as a comic epic poem in prose.

The story describes the adventures of a good-natured footman. He travels by road from London with his friend and mentor, Abraham Adams, who happens to be quite absent-minded, and whom Joseph meets at an inn while Adams happens to be going to London to have his sermons published, but he decides to go back to the parish because his wife did not pack the sermons.
