Thomas Crane was an American scholar and writer, mostly known as a collector and publisher of folk-tales and legends. A master of many languages, Crane translated French, Italian and Spanish works, having become one of the most popular adapters of children’s fairy tales. 
“Scissors They Were” is an Italian fairy tale, entered in the “Italian Popular Tales” collection. The story is about one man, who is a tailor, so is his wife, who in addition is a good housekeeper. One day the husband finds some things in the kitchen broken. He asks the wife, how were they broken, and the woman answers in anger, that it did a pair of scissors… The popular tale is about falsehood, contumacy and its consequences.
