SAMPLE EXCERPT:

“What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?”

Writing poetry was a means of understanding life and its many challenges for Paula McLain.
When she wrote The Paris Wife, though, she also had understanding as an inspiration and goal. She hopes that her readers would understand what a complex character Ernest Hemingway is. Hadley once said that Ernest Hemingway had more sides to him than any geometry book could chart.
Ernest Hemingway had a good number of wives, which may have influenced his writing career. Hadley was his Paris wife. He had a wife in Key West named Pauline Pfeiffer. He also had a Spanish Civil War wife by the name of Martha Gelhorn.
There are a lot of people to write about in Paris during the Jazz age. However, it was Ernest Hemingway that caught the attention of McLain. She became interested in the brilliant writer when she read his memoir, A Moveable Feast. She was most moved when she read the line where he said, “I wish I had died before I ever loved anyone but her.” Paula McLain viewed these words as tender, poignant and full of regret
