“The Pearl” by John Steinbeck was first published in 1947. This beautiful novella revolves around a pearl diver named Kino.

The story very descriptively explores man’s nature as well as greed and evil. It is assumed that the story was inspired by a Mexican folk tale from La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Steinbeck had heard that story while he was visiting that formerly pearl rich region in 1940.

“The Pearl” was made into a Mexican movie named La Perla. The book became very popular right after its publication. It is said to be one Steinbeck’s most popular books.

“The Pearl” is used extensively in high school classes all over the world. It is often discussed in academic circles around the world.
