Dieciséis países de la región de América Latina y el Caribe han alcanzado ya la meta del primer Objetivo del Milenio de ¨reducir a la mitad el porcentaje de personas que padecen hambre¨. Otros países están logrando importantes resultados. En enfoque de doble vía, según el cual se combinan políticas y programas a largo plazo al tiempo que se fomentan medidas más inmediatas ha estado en la base del éxito. Pese a ello, 47 millones de personas siguen padeciendo hambre en la región, que produce suficientes alimentos pero que aún debe abordar el desafío de la redistribución de los ingresos mediante cambios estructurales y el compromiso político de los Gobiernos y la sociedad civil.
