Long ago when the first people were migrating to into the Americas much was unknown and a mystery.
A boy with extra ordinary talent and capability selects the claw of an eagle and becomes Taelo (Tā Low). An eagle, lets out a joyous scream and plucks the claw from Taelo’s upstretched hand. He is joined by his cousin Golden Hawk. The two boys are cousins born on the same day. They are inseparable and face many adventurous challenges.
The Eagle’s scream is heard each time Taelo and Golden Hawk face a new challenge. Taelo and his team plan a trip that takes them to Andes Mountains.
Broken Spear the seer of the others informs Taelo that the teams journey will be in two parts. One as planned but on the return there would be a trip to the north. He warns Taelo of upcoming battles and a threat to Quite Rabbit now Taelo’s partner.
Taelo and Golden Hawk equip and practice the team in how to fight a battle against superior force. Their practice pays off when they face more than thirty warriors as they make their way to the Andes. The team climbs to the top of a volcano and see both the Atlantic and the Pacific from one view point.
The people of the Condor greet and invite them to spend time with their clan. They remain until the day of the Condor celebration when a virgin is sacrificed to the spirit of the Condor. Quiet Rabbit and Busy Bee rescue Feather in the Wind, daughter to the Condor Clan Leader. The team immediately departs and heads toward the North.
Their return trip is delayed when they confronted by the Warrior Clan. They receive an invitation they cannot refuse. During their stay it becomes clear to Taelo the threat Broken Spear had seen was not to Quiet Rabbit but to Feather in the Wind.
Sharp Stone, co-leader of the Warrior Clan insists Feather in the Wind remains behind to be his wife.
Taelo defeats him in battle and momentarily takes control of the fighters that followed Sharp Stone. The goal is to leave safely.
Taelo turns the fighters over to Tough Hide the other leader of the Warrior Clan. This earns him great respect and he is allowed to leave.
Taelo and his team are escorted northward by the sons of Tough Hide.
When Taelo finally informs the team of the second part of the journey they all are unanimous in their desire to continue. They return to the Clan of the Others. Broken Spear describes the Northern destination for the team. He is not clear on the specifics of the journey north only that it is urgent and time is of the essence.
Winter looms and the team is faced with the prospect of a tough cold winter.
The team, guided by Broken Spear’s guidance find a long, green valley with a towering water fall at the far end. There Taelo finds yet another hot spring a top of a large mound. At this spot they all join to build a heated lodge.
The lodge is done just as the first snows arrive. The team discovers their valley is the original valley where Elk Clan first settled when they arrived hundreds of years before. They had move southward because of the harsh winters.
The stories that Taelo and the other Elk clan members had listened to as children were actually true.
Based on the stories of old Taelo sets out to gather salt.
On his return trip he encounters a group of women and children running for their lives from cannibals. He and Running Stag, the rescued young boy, return to free those still in the hands of the cannibals.
They arrive just as the father is dragged out to be killed and eaten.
The use of a new weapon, the bow and arrow and his team of sled wolves give Taelo the advantage of surprise. Running Stag saves the day by wounding the last attacking warrior.
Together they return to the cave of the Ancients where they encounter the last of the cannibals who have captured and are just beginning to torture Golden Hawk. Once again Running Stag helps defeating the enemy. Taelo returns to the lodge with a group of people all eager to join what Taelo christens “The Northern Elk Clan”.
Taelo learns that there is a group of people stranded somewhere to the north. He, Golden Hawk and Little Otter set out with three sled teams to rescue them.
A blinding blizzard challenges the team to get all the people back to the lodge. There are too many to bring back with the sleds.
Three loaded sleds take the majority through the blizzard. Running Stag is driving Taelo’s sled whose lead dog is Lasher. Until this moment Lasher only accepted Taelo as the driver. Lasher guides the three sleds back to the lodge.
Taelo stays behind and brings the youngest and most able back on foot.
Taelo has almost given up hope when Lasher returns to guide him back to the lodge.
Lasher guides the roped together group back through pure animal instinct. Taelo and his group know they have just experienced a miracle when they hear the wolves howling in the compound.
Lasher his faithful sled wolf and Running Stag both emerge as heroes. Taelo emerges as a legend.
The entire group protected from the winters cold begin the challenging journey of becoming one clan.
In the spring, Taelo and Golden Hawk decide to travel north along the coast to see if there are any other people coming into the country.
Back at his cave Broken Spear awakens from a dream with the certainty that Taelo will need help in battle. He sends Burly Bear with a all the warriors to help."
Taelo and Golden Hawk hear the cry of the eagle and know that they face some sort of trial. They discover a large number of the cannibals about to attack a peaceful group migrating into the country. Their attempt at giving warning is mistaken as an attack. This however at least get the group armed.
The battle with the cannibals is going badly when a tremendous clamor and shouting comes from behind the superior attacking force. Quiet Rabbit, Busy Bee and Running Stag make up the rear attack with enough noise that it disorients the attackers who withdraw in confusion.
Taelo quickly leads all the survivors up the mountain side. He and Golden Hawk set up the defenses to fight against large number of warriors the will face. Running Stag is positioned to command a steep slope where he can roll down logs and stones. The rest of those able to fight are positioned to defend the more open area.
Taelo’s team puts up a valiant fight but it is clear they will not be able to hold.
Suddenly they hear the battle roar of the Others as Burley Bear and his warriors attack from the rear. Running Stag is almost over run by warriors who have climbed the cliff at his side. Outnumbered and out sized he remembers the story of how to take down bears. His small size becomes an advantage and he holds his ground until Quite Rabbit arrives with help.
It is the final battle for all the cannibals. None survive.
Taelo brings yet more people into the Northern Elk Clan.
The “Northern Elk” Clan arrive early to the Elk clan’s meeting valley. The Northern Elk clan has an over-abundance of young women and have become the single largest Elk sub-clan. Taelo knows that this will be an unusual meeting of the Clan. He also has some ideas as to who should be named as the Northern Clan leader.
Neither Taelo nor Golden Hawk wanted to be the leader of the Northern Elk clan. Taelo seeds Wise Owl the leader of the Clan Elders with a unique candidate.
The Northern Elk clan members greet each arriving Elk sub clan with help and a sumptuous meal. This and the fact that the Northern Elk clan has all their wealth on display helps to cushion the shock of an entire new group joining the Elk clan. Not since Grey Fox Running and White Swan brought the Others to join has a meeting such as this taken place.
Taelo speaks to the council of elders, excludes himself and Golden Hawk and places the selection of the Leader of the Northern Elk clan in their hands.
When the candidate are presented, there is a backlash against the most prominent candidate, White Swan. Her defenders point out the accomplishment of the women of the Elk Clan.
Wise Owl skillfully guides the council to get the outcome he desires. He over sees the redistribution of clan membership to better balance the sub clans.
White Swan becomes the first woman clan leader.
